What is a Jet Propeller?
An aircraft propeller is an aerodynamic device that converts rotational energy into thrust. Functioning like a set of rotating wings, it pushes air backward to propel the aircraft forward. This rotational power can be supplied by various sources, including piston engines, electric motors, or a gas turbine engine.
The term ‘jet propeller’ typically refers to a propeller driven by a gas turbine engine, a configuration more accurately called a turboprop. Unlike a pure jet engine that generates thrust from exhaust gases, a turboprop uses most of its power to spin a propeller. This hybrid design takes advantage of the efficiency of propellers at lower speeds and altitudes.
Turboprop Engines – An Overview
In a turboprop, the gas turbine’s power is channeled almost entirely into driving a propeller via a reduction gearbox. A small fraction of thrust comes from the exhaust gases, but the propeller does the real work. This design proves highly efficient for aircraft flying at lower speeds and altitudes—typically below 30,000 feet.

Counter-Rotating Propellers – Benefits and Uses
Counter-rotating propellers are a sophisticated design featuring two propellers on the same axis that spin in opposite directions. Their primary purpose is to counteract the torque effect—the tendency of an aircraft to twist opposite to the propeller’s rotation. By balancing these forces, the system significantly improves aircraft stability and handling.
Beyond just balancing torque, this configuration boosts thrust efficiency. A single propeller generates a swirling slipstream, wasting rotational energy. The rear propeller, however, captures and straightens this turbulent airflow, converting that lost energy into useful forward thrust. This elegant solution reduces aerodynamic losses and squeezes more power from the same engine.
Given their complexity and weight, counter-rotating propellers are reserved for high-performance aircraft where maximum power and control are paramount. They are found on select military aircraft and specialized turboprop models, where enhanced efficiency and stability are critical.
How Jet Propellers Work
A jet propeller’s function is simple: convert rotational power into forward thrust. Each blade acts as a rotating wing (airfoil), creating a pressure difference that generates forward lift. As this process accelerates a large mass of air backward, Newton’s third law provides the equal and opposite reaction that pushes the aircraft forward.
Propeller blade design is essential for efficiency. Blades feature a distinct twist along their length because the tip travels much faster than the section near the hub. This clever design ensures the entire blade maintains an optimal angle of attack to the oncoming air, maximizing thrust while preventing any part of the blade from stalling or creating drag.
To adapt to different flight phases like takeoff, climbing, and cruising, modern propellers use a variable-pitch system. This system adjusts the angle of the blades (the pitch)—often automatically via a constant-speed mechanism—to keep the engine running at its most efficient RPM.
The Role of Blade Pitch in Efficiency
Blade pitch—the angle of the propeller blades relative to the oncoming airflow—is a key factor in efficiency. A fine (low) pitch takes a smaller ‘bite’ of air and is ideal for generating high thrust during takeoff. Conversely, a coarse (high) pitch takes a larger ‘bite’ and is more efficient for high-speed cruising. The ability to control this angle allows a propeller-driven aircraft to perform optimally across its entire flight envelope.
Propellers are categorized by pitch control into two main types: fixed-pitch and variable-pitch. Fixed-pitch propellers have blades at a single, unchangeable angle; this design is simple and lightweight but is only efficient at a specific speed. In contrast, variable-pitch propellers allow for in-flight blade angle adjustments, ensuring the engine operates at its most efficient RPM thereby boosting both performance and fuel economy.
Feathering is an essential safety feature of variable-pitch systems for multi-engine aircraft. In case of an engine failure, an unpowered propeller would windmill and create significant drag. Feathering rotates the blades to be nearly parallel to the airflow, minimizing this drag and allowing the aircraft to be controlled safely on its remaining engines.
